REMINDERS

Please read everything carefully before attending.

WE WILL HAVE TO ASK YOU TO LEAVE IF YOU AND/OR YOUR CHILD DO NOT FOLLOW ALL SAFETY GUIDELINES.

General Information

Location: UAB Chemistry Building

Check-in: Chemistry Building Room 101

Date: Saturday, May 16th

Time: 10 am - 4 pm.

You may arrive and leave at anytime during the event. You may also leave and return. We ask that you check-in and check-out in CHEM101 each time you come and go to receive and return your goggles.

Parental Consent

All children must have a completed parental consent waiver signed by their legal guardian. Forms will be available at check-in. However, children attending with an adult other than their legal guardian must come with a signed copy of the waiver. This form will be sent out via email prior to the event.

Safety and Dress Code

In order to hold this event at UAB, we must be in compliance with all UAB policies. Namely, all attendees - children, friends, and parents - as well as volunteers must be wearing the following

1. Shirts with sleeves (t-shirts okay, no tank tops)

2. Long pants/ dresses that cover the legs completely as far as the ankles

3. Closed-toe shoes (no sandals or flip-flops)

BE AWARE! FAILURE TO MEET OUR DRESS CODE MEANS YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE EVENT.

Eye protection will be provided at the event at check-in. Safety Glasses/ Goggles must be worn at all times and returned when checking out.

All of our experiments have been tested and have been deemed safe for children. While most experiments are hands-on, several are demonstrations only and will be manned by our trained volunteers. With that in mind, if at any point you feel an experiment is unsafe, too messy, or too much fun, you may skip it and move on to the next one. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO EVERYTHING!

All children under 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult (21+) at all times.

Any questions or concerns during the event can be brought to any of our volunteers or officers. If anything comes up, please notify us as soon as possible!

Food

Snacks will be available in CHEM101, but lunch is not provided. There are several lunch venues are near UAB, including Subway, Al's, Hungry Howies, and Papa John's. The UAB Commons on the Green is also open with an all-you-care-to-eat lunch menu. You may also bring outside food into CHEM101 during lunch time, but food may not be taken to any of the experiment stations inside or outside.

Please notify us of any food allergies via email before the event. You are also advised to notify our check-in staff and to bring any medications necessary in the event of a reaction. Several demonstrations also make use of food items such as milk, eggs, and strawberries, though in general, nothing used in experiments may be consumed. If we are notified in advance, items children are particularly sensitive to may be moved to a separate area.

Final Comments

We have around 30 experiments planned. At each station we will have instructions as well as explanations. We try to focus on basic chemistry concepts that are broken down into easy-to-understand explanations and everyday applications. Some of the coolest parts of the experiments will be missed if these explanations are skipped. Please help your child/children to read through these and encourage your child to ask questions! One of our goals is to get people thinking like scientists--to learn to question the world around them.

We know that chemistry can provide some of the most fascinating explanations of how our world works, and we want to share this fascination with future generations.

It is important to come to this event with an open mind (You might just learn something yourself!).

Just remember...hYou may have a future chemist with you!
